Less
than a Penny: The Instructional Materials Shortage & How
It Shortchanges Students, Teachers, & Schools. Textbooks
and other instructional materials are second only to the teacher
in the central role they play in classroom instruction. Well-researched,
standards-based instructional materials are an essential key
to successful teaching and learning. It is absolutely essential
every student be provided with a standards based textbook in
each of the core academic areas (reading/lnaguage arts, math,
science and history/social studies). Today one out of six elementary
and secondary school teachers who use textbooks in their classes
say they do not have enough books for every child in their class.
AAP and educators nationwide hope that you will take a few moments
to read Less Than A Penny and join with our effort to increase
federal support for instructional materials.Go to PDF |
Educational
testing is an essential activity in every school, in every school
district and in every state. Standardized tests are used to evaluate
students and schools; to help improve teaching and learning;
and to generate important information from which educational
policy decisions can be made. Yet, when the results of these
tests are not as good as one would like, there has been an increasing
tendency by some to blame the test. In other words, if you don't
like the results it mabe be easier to kill the messenger than
fix the underlying problem the test revealed. The Association
of American Publishers' Test committee created this brochure,
which is an executive summary of a book written by Richard Phelps
entitled Kill the Messenger, to help policy makers and the public
better understand the growing debate about the use of standardized
tests in our nation's schools.Go to PDF |
As
every teacher knows, one size does not fit all in the classroom.
Children enter school with varying levels of readiness, and they
learn at different rates. The Essential Role of Supplemental
Materials in Achieving the Goals of No Child Left Behind seeks
to inform parents, teachers and policymakers about the use of
research-based supplemental instructional materials as part of
the solution to helping all children succeed academically.Go to PDF |
