Joint AAP/NEA Instructional Materials Survey (August 2002) (PDF)
In 2002, AAP partnered with the National Education Association (NEA) to conduct national and California surveys to determine whether students had adequate access to textbooks. One thousand teachers nationwide and an additional group of 400 California teachers were surveyed in the summer of 2002 about the age of textbooks currently in use and whether sufficient copies of textbooks were available to students both in the classroom and at home. The survey shows little improvement from a similar survey by the NEA and AAP in 1996.

The Textbook Shortage in California (January 2003) (PDF)
Textbooks and other instructional materials are second only to the teacher in the central role they play in K-12 classroom instruction. Well-researched, standards-based instructional materials are an essential key to successful teaching and learning. Unfortunately, at a time when California and the federal government are demanding higher standards and greater accountability in our schools, far too many students are not given the tools they need.
