AAP Libraries Joint Committee with ALA/ALCTS

Committee membership is open to all AAP members, and others who have an interest in this topic may become guests of the committee. For more information on the committee, please contact Katie Ly at kly@publishers.org.

The AAP Trade Libraries Committee, one of AAP’s longest-standing committees, is made up of book publishers who service the library market. The mission of the committee is to consider ideas and issues that pertain to the sale of books into all types of libraries, with a focus on public libraries; to provide information to the book publishing industry, librarians, and to the public on topics of common interest; and to encourage the exchange of ideas among publishers, wholesalers, and librarians, limited as always to appropriate and proper cooperation.

To achieve its goals, the Committee works with and supports the initiatives of a variety of groups including the American Library Association (ALA), Friends of Libraries USA (FOLUSA), the Association for Library Collection and Technical Services (ALCTS) division of ALA, and various librarians and regional library associations.

The committee launched a fundraising initiative in January, 2004, called "Publishers Love Libraries," encouraging people across the U.S. to write their elected officials and urge them to support legislation that would maintain adequate levels of funding for libraries. The committee also supports the work of the American Libraries Association Libraries Business Alliance, a group of industry leaders who work together to advocate for adequate funding for libraries.

Additionally, the Committee sponsors programs on topics of interest to publishers and librarians, such as creating successful library events, and is creating a matchmaking website that will connect authors with libraries for events across the U.S.
The committee has published a historic comparative survey of library marketing practices that is unique in surveying libraries, wholesalers, and publishers, and has also historically lobbied for Catalog in Publication (CIP) and data exchange standards with the Library of Congress.
