Through the Eye of a Needle: Wealth, the Fall of Rome, and the Making of Christianity in the West, 350-550 AD
By Peter Brown
![]() |
Taking its title from the proverb attributed to Jesus that it is easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into heaven, Through the Eye of a Needle traces the role that wealth and poverty played in the transformation of the early Christian Church. With unparalleled command of textual and archeological sources and remarkably lucid prose, world-renowned ancient historian Peter Brown examines how a small religious sect that preached poverty grew into the most wealthy and powerful institution in Europe. Brown provides a sweeping social history of the Church through the lens of money to show how attitudes towards wealth changed drastically over time as a result of ever-growing inequality in late Antiquity, a historical time period Brown is credited with having coined.
Following Constantine’s conversion to Christianity, the early Christian Church suddenly found itself the beneficiary of donations from wealthy Romans seeking salvation. At stake was the very soul of the burgeoning Christian Church, and debate raged within the Church about what to do with this newfound wealth. Soon Christian writers ceased denouncing the evils of wealth and insisting on its total renunciation and instead found new ways of gaining converts through the redistribution of wealth to average citizens in times of stress. Through the Eye of a Needle provides a thorough study of the early history of the Church from the Fall of Rome to the triumph of Christianity.
